About the Location

With the growth of coal mining in the city, Lethbridge’s population continued to rise. The need for rail line access to the mines led to the construction of a bridge. Work began in August 1908, and the High Level Bridge was completed on June 22, 1909, officially opening on November 1, 1909. It cost a staggering $1,334,525 to build.

To this day, the bridge remains the longest and highest of its kind in the world, measuring 5,327.625 feet (1.6 km) in length and 314 feet (96 meters) in height. Over the years, some have even described it as one of the wonders of the world!

The CPR rail line has stood the test of time and is still in use today, with numerous trains crossing the bridge daily.

Access to the bridge is located at the west end of 3rd Avenue South and Scenic Drive.
