HIBIKIYA, a Taiko drumming group based in Lethbridge, was originally formed in 2007 under the Lethbridge Community Taiko Association and became an independent entity under the Southern Alberta Taiko Society in 2014. The group currently consists of ten dedicated members.
With a deep passion for Taiko drumming, HIBIKIYA is committed to sharing both the art form and its cultural roots throughout Lethbridge and southern Alberta. Performances are held at various community events and schools, often accompanied by educational components that highlight the cultural significance of Taiko in Japanese tradition. Workshops and hands-on drumming experiences are also offered to the public.
Practice sessions are held weekly to learn and refine new songs. The group is led by sensei Bryan Pervereseff, who makes annual visits to Lethbridge’s sister city, Towada, Japan. As an honorary member of the Taiko group Suijin Kamanari Daiko, he receives instruction and new compositions, which he brings back to Canada for HIBIKIYA to learn and perform.
