Starting point: Trailhead starts at the Popson Park parking lot

This is a popular route for walking dogs and it is no wonder - it’s a beautiful trail right along the Oldman River on the outskirts of the city. If you prefer to spend your time strolling beside the river, turn around to make it an out-and-back trail instead of a loop. The loop will take you up to the road which is not quite as scenic or enjoyable.

Popson Park has a high concentration of Western Prairie Rattlesnakes - it is best to stick to the pathway and be aware of your surroundings as you explore this beautiful park.

Historical info

Popson Park was named to honour the Popson family, who homesteaded on this land. The Popson family has been in Lethbridge since 1886 and were part of the early eastern European families who moved to Lethbridge to mine and farm. The park was named in 1986 and opened in 1987. As you’re in the park, see if you can spot on the south side of the river where the old Crowsnest Railway ran from the 1890s to 1910. The old railbed is visible in several places.
