Join Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden and the Lethbridge Shakespeare Performance Society for an unforgettable evening of outdoor theatre as Shakespeare in the Garden presents William Shakespeare’s powerful tragedy, King Lear.

Set against the stunning natural backdrop of the Prairie Garden and illuminated by the beauty of a summer evening, this immersive performance brings one of Shakespeare’s darkest and most celebrated works to life.

King Lear tells the story of an aging king who divides his kingdom among his three daughters, believing love can be measured through praise and flattery. When his youngest daughter, Cordelia, refuses to flatter him, Lear disowns her and gives power to his other daughters, Regan and Goneril. Their betrayal sets into motion a devastating journey through madness, ambition, loyalty, and redemption.

Alongside Lear’s tragic downfall, his loyal friend Gloucester faces his own heartbreaking choices between his two sons. Through storms both literal and emotional, King Lear explores family, power, betrayal, and the enduring strength of love.

Guests are encouraged to arrive early and enjoy the atmosphere before the performance begins. Please note the Garden will close to regular visitors at 5:00 PM on performance days as event setup begins.
