Chanse competed at the Ponoka Stampede from June 26 to July 1, winning the Ponoka Stampede Aggregate. His weekend was filled with standout moments, including breaking the track record on opening night, picking up four day money runs, and leading the aggregate from start to finish. Chanse capped off an unforgettable week and now gets ready to compete at the Calgary Stampede.
Chanse competed at the Wainwright Stampede from June 20 to 22, finishing 31st overall. A strong opening night was impacted by two barrel penalties, taking the team out of top five contention for the day. On Day 2, steady rain and challenging track conditions tested drivers across the board. Chanse posted a time of 1:11.81, which included a five-second penalty for knocking over a barrel. Unfortunately, the final night was cancelled because of the weather. The team will now shift their focus to the Ponoka Stampede, one of the most anticipated events of the season.
Chanse competed at the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede from June 12 to 15, winning the event for the second year in a row and reaffirming his place as one of the top drivers on the WPCA circuit. He placed first on both Day 1 and Day 3, setting a dominant tone early in the competition. Consistent runs throughout the weekend secured his position at the top of the leaderboard. With the Calgary Stampede just around the corner, Chanse continues to build momentum with every race.
Chanse competed at the Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship from June 5 to June 8, finishing 34th overall. He came out strong with the third fastest time on Day 1, but a 10 second penalty on Day 2 for a missed barrel knocked him down in the standings. Even so, his drive and determination were clear, and there is no doubt he is one to watch as the season rolls on.
“We went into Bonnyville with hope of a fresh start after a disappointing first show. It started great and ended even better with a first place day money run. We had a little hiccup in the middle though when trying 3 new horses off the 3 barrel. They decided they didn’t want to turn the bottom barrel leaving us with a big penalty. All in all I do feel it was productive. Teaching the new horses who have never been in a race before and learning where to place them before the big shows like ponoka and Calgary stampede. We’re going into Medicine Hat with high hopes, good energy and horses who are ready to run. Fingers crossed this rain passes.”
Chanse competed at the Grande Prairie Stompede from May 28 to June 1, finishing in 44th place overall. Riding with six new horses acquired in the off season and dealing with the aftermath of a flipped wagon made for a challenging weekend. Thankfully, none of the horses were hurt. While it wasn’t the result he was aiming for, it’s early in the season and the road to the Stampede is just getting started.
“Chanse’s wagon flipped night 1 in Grande Prairie (so scary) and he got a ‘No Time’. He got no point for that night, so now he’s digging himself out of a hole and in an early heat. Doesn’t affect Calgary Stampede, but affects his standings at the WPCA.”
Chanse Vigen’s “I’m Your Huckleberry” grant is a personal initiative that helps support a family in need each season. To raise funds, Chanse and his crew sell their signature pink sunglasses for $20 a pair, with 100 percent of proceeds going directly to the cause.
