Cherry Blossom Workshop - Lead by Lyndon Penner

A Celebration of Cherry Blossoms- The cherry blossom is possibly the most important flower in Japanese culture, and is nationally adored and respected. Here in Alberta, we can also take part in the importance of the cherry blossom (sakura) festival by growing our own cherry blossoms! There are actually hundreds of species of cherries, some of them are hardy here and some of them are not. Many provide us with shade, beautiful autumn colour, as well as edible (and delicious!) fruit! Join us for an in-depth examination of both the cherry blossom in Japanese culture as well as which cherries to plant in your own prairie garden! Whether you are interested in attracting birds and pollinators, growing your own fruit, or simply the history of these enigmatic trees, this presentation will have a lot to offer!

This workshop will be lead by renowned gardening author and columnist Lyndon Penner. Penner brings an incredible wealth of knowledge and dynamic energy to all things green. You will be sure to increase your gardening knowledge and receive some inspiration for your backyard or gardening project.

Participants will meet at Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden at 9:00am. There will be morning instruction until 1:00pm, when the class will break for lunch. A bento box lunch and refreshments will be provided during the one-hour lunchbreak. The afternoon will feature a guided bus tour of Lethbridge apple trees (cherry blossoms) from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Guests will arrive back at the Garden to enjoy sake and refreshments while the sunset shimmers.

Your take-home gift from the workshop will be an authentic wooden sake cup and the Garden will provide two free YK3 Nikka Yuko Sake samples. Cash bar will be available to those 18 and above. Those that are not 18 years of age will receive complementary Japanese pop, tea or coffee.

Cost of the Cherry Blossom Workshop is $125.
